Japan’s Grant Assistance for the Project for Improvement of Primary School Environments in Houaphan Province


TThe Government of Japan decided to provide grant assistance worth 84,633 US dollars for the Project for Improvement of Primary School Environments in Houaphan Province, under the Grant Assistance Scheme for Grassroots Human Security Projects.


The Grant Contract of the above project was signed on November 10, 2009 at Mai Thi Chit Guest House, Vientiane Capital, between H.E. Mr. Masaaki MIYASHITA, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Mr. Phonsouk CHANTHAVONG, Head of the Department of Education, Houaphan Province.


Dr. Somthong VILAYPHON, Director of the Houahpan Provincial Cabinet and other officials concerned attended the signing ceremony.


Japan’s Grant Assistance for the Project for Development of Alternative Livelihood for Opium Farming in Houn District, Oudomxay Province

Through this project, 2 primary schools will be built in Hap village in Xiangkho District and Kang village in Sopbao District. The Government of Japan has so far provided grant assistances to construct 15 primary schools in Houaphan Province, under the Grand Assistance Scheme for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

There is acute shortage of school facilities in rural and remote areas in the Lao PDR, especially in Houaphan Province, and a number of school children face the problem of access to primary education. It is expected that primary education in these areas will be significantly improved through this project.
