over the Tohoku Pacific Earthquake
On March 11, Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong sent a message of sympathy to Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Naoto Kan following the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan’s northeast coast on the same day.
On March 13, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hiem Phommachanh, on behalf of the Lao government, presented a donation of US$100,000 to the Japanese Ambassador to Laos Ms. Junko Yokota to the emergency relief efforts in Japan.
On March 14, President Choummaly Sayasone sent a message of condolence to Emperor Akihito of Japan expressing sympathy over the tragedy caused by the massive earthquake and tsunami.
The Lao government opened bank accounts in the Banque pour le Commerce Exterieur Lao (BCEL) to call for donations from the general public to assist the victims of the earthquake and tsunami.
