2017/10/12

Bokeo, 26 September 2017 – The Government of Japan has handed over a school which was financed and constructed by the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) in Pha-Oudom District, Bokeo Province. The official handover ceremony to mark the occasion was held on 26 September, 2017 with the attendance of Mr. Pongsavanh PANYASAK, Vice Governor of Pha-Oudom District, Mr. Kazuhiro KUNO, Minister of Japan to the Lao PDR, and other officials concerned. The agreement for the Grant Aid project, amounting to 73,266 US dollars, was made in March 2017.
At the Kenkham Primary School, the temporary classrooms were in bad condition and they had required frequent repair work. Therefore, the project was formulated to improve the educational environment by constructing one additional block of six fully furnished classrooms. As a result of the project, a total of 305 students per year will enjoy the benefits of an improved educational environment.
During the ceremony, Mr. Kazuhiro KUNO noted a significant improvement had been achieved and expressed his hope that the students of Kenkham Primary School would come back to the school even after their graduation to contribute to the development of the community in future.
Japan has for many years supported the efforts of the Lao Government to improve basic education. Through this GGP grant scheme, Japan has funded 288 education projects in the Lao PDR since 1989, including 173 primary schools and 65 lower and upper secondary schools.
