Conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star Upon Prof. Dr. Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, Former Minister of Health of the Lao PDR

The Government of Japan announced today that the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star is conferred on Prof. Dr. Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, Former Minister of Health of the Lao PDR. The Embassy humbly extends sincere congratulations to Prof. Dr. Bounfeng on the conferment of the decoration.
Examples of his major contributions related with Japan are as follows:
1.Prof. Dr. Bounfeng contributed to deepening cooperation with Japan in the health sector in his capacities as Deputy Minister of Health and Minister of Health. In particular, he played an important role in enhancing Japan's presence in this field by actively accepting and smoothly implementing Japan’s support for COVID-19 countermeasures. Moreover, he made a significant contribution to the facilitation of the "Health Sector Working Group," a meeting for coordination between development partners and the government of Lao PDR, hosted by the Ministry of Health and co-chaired by Japan and the World Health Organization (WHO).
2.Last year, when Laos held the ASEAN Chairmanship, Prof. Dr. Bounfeng successfully chaired the 10th ASEAN Plus Three Health Ministers Meeting as chairperson. He also cooperated in promoting collaboration in the health sector through exchanges of views, including with our country's key figures.
3.Prof. Dr. Bounfeng served for many years as the head of the Laos branch of the Nagoya University Alumni Association, where he himself earned his master's and doctoral degrees. In his leadership role among Lao alumni of Japanese universities within the Lao society, he encouraged Lao next generation to study in Japan.
The conferment ceremony for Prof. Dr. Bounfeng will be held on a later date.
